Buying store-bought shaving cream is easy, sure I can admit that. But have you ever really looked to see what was in it? Most of the time they are made of chemical ingredients which seem to use every letter of the alphabet at least 2 times, of which I clearly cannot pronounce without getting tongue tied and utterly exhausted. With the problems we have trying to prevent cancer, allergies, and a slew of other environmentally caused health problems, eliminating chemical additives in our lives is a huge step in hopefully living longer. It may sound crazy to make your own shaving cream, but I can tell you that it’s “fun times all around” making it which surely outweighs cost.
1/2 cup shea butter
1/3 cup sweet almond oil or melted coconut oil
10 drops essential oils of choice
2 tablespoons baking soda
Step 1 – Shea Butter
Slowly melt the shea butter on low heat in a sauce pan until it’s soft enough to be able to whip. Whip up shea butter in a bowl.
Step 2 – Coconut or Almond Oil
Coconut oil will can also be melted on the stove top or even in the microwave. The consistency should look like, well, oil! Then slowly add melted coconut or sweet almond oil as you whip.
Step 3 – Essential Oils
Continue whipping and add your essential oils slowly.
Step 4 – Baking Soda
Let the mixture cool in the refrigerator to set or harden. Once it’s hardened up, mix is your 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Using an electric mixer or a hand whisk, beat the mixture until it becomes light, fluffy and creamy.
This shaving cream formula is best kept jarred in a cool, dark place. It can be stored for a month’s time which is a great shelf life for a DIY recipe. If you’re looking for a fragrance free version, omit the essential oils, skip the refrigeration and the baking soda. You can feel free to rid your body of hair knowing you’re using a great chemical free cream that helps to nourish your skin and soothe your skin naturally.
